Fast Growing Mini Native Forests

How the Miyawaki method of creating tiny forests could be the solution to Perth's tree canopy issues

By Pamela Medlen

Tiny forests are sprouting across Australia, rapidly restoring green space in small urban areas. Using the Miyawaki method, these dense forests grow 10 times faster than traditional ones, helping to combat urban heat and habitat loss.

Perth ecologist Dr. Grey Coupland is leading efforts to plant them in schools and communities, where they provide cooling, boost biodiversity, and serve as outdoor classrooms. These forests are proving that even the smallest urban spaces can have a big environmental impact.

NJ Mini Forests Growing Fast in Year 3

By Holly Lehren

In Union County, New Jersey, two fast-growing mini forests are cooling neighborhoods and creating thriving ecosystems. These young trees and shrubs are planted in super-rich soil and grow rapidly above and below ground. Check in on 3-year old forests in Elizabeth and Summit, NJ, and glimpse a new forest in Ithaca, NY. As local native forest-planting catches on, this microclimate solution will have large impacts.

Watertown Plants Miyawaki Forest to Boost Urban Biodiversity and Environmental Education

By Dan Hogan

WATERTOWN, MA – Local residents, city leaders, and volunteers have transformed part of Lowell Elementary School’s lawn into a Miyawaki Forest. Using a method pioneered by botanist Akira Miyawaki, the dense, fast-growing forest will boost biodiversity and serve as a hands-on learning space.

Featuring native plants like oaks and black tupelos, the ecosystem will be self-sustaining in three years. An outdoor classroom will provide students with lessons on climate resilience, while community programs will empower residents to engage in local environmental efforts.
