Notes on News: Metaphor Madness

By Susan Haig

Frank Bruni's October 8 New York Times  op-ed column about news media metaphor madness has stirred interesting conversation. Our favorite response to his piece appeared in the Times two days later in a succinct letter to the editor from Mike McCurry, President Clinton's press secretary (1995 - 1998). It read, in part:

"If editors and reporters dismissed quotes and sound bites that border on the outrageous and focused instead on those who argue more substantively and perhaps more gently, maybe our headline-hungry politicians would curb their bombast."
