CivicStory is a nonprofit that funds independent reporting of solutions-based, engaging news. These stories inspire and amplify good ideas about creating a sustainable environment in NJ. By sharing the information widely, citizens can quickly respond to the global environmental crisis with appropriate action in their locale.  Our core program - NJ Sustainability News - is a reporting fellowship and digital platform to accelerate NJ's shift to healthy, beneficial relationships between people and nature. Job Description - Senior Editor

The senior editor brings excellent writing, tech, social media, and audience development skills to CivicStory. The SE crafts bi-weekly news updates, supports our NewsMatch fundraising campaign, and works with staff, board members and partners to generate dialog on the civic role of news. The SE is flexible yet organized, collaborative, and thoughtful about words and meanings in our diverse democracy.

Responsibilities and tasks:

  • Create brief bi-weekly news updates that engage a growing readership 

  • Announce the next NJ Sustainability News fellowship (Feb-May 2023); help recruit a strong pool of fellow and newsroom applicants  

  • Engage NJ journalists, news editors, nonprofits, and the public through social media and outreach

  • Guide our editorial advisory meetings; sharpen our editorial goals

Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing and analytical skills; strong organization and attention to detail

  • Web publishing and social media skills; works across digital platforms

  • Technical proficiency in Excel, Word, and Mailchimp  

  • Passion for empowering citizens of all backgrounds

  • Bachelors in journalism or equivalent experience

Timeframe:  Minimum 3-month contract starting November 2022; remote position; estimated 15 hours/week, $35/hour. Flexible schedule: some weekday availability needed.  Applications are welcome even without all listed qualifications.
